Getting Married in Umbria: An Italian Wedding Away from the Ordinary

An intimate, authentic and beautifully understated destination for your wedding in Italy.

When couples begin dreaming of a destination wedding in Italy, a few places naturally come to mind. Tuscany. Lake Como. The Amalfi Coast.

They are beautiful for a reason. But there is another part of Italy, right in its heart, where the landscape feels quieter, the villages are still deeply connected to everyday life and celebrations can unfold with a wonderful sense of intimacy.

Welcome to Umbria.

Known as the “green heart of Italy”, Umbria is a region of rolling hills, olive groves, vineyards and medieval towns built from warm, time-worn stone.

There is something beautifully understated about it. And perhaps this is exactly what makes getting married in Umbria so special.

For couples travelling from abroad, an Umbria destination wedding can become more than a beautiful day in Italy. It can become a few days of slow mornings, long dinners, countryside views and meaningful time with the people who have travelled across the world to celebrate with you.

Not simply a wedding. A little Italian journey built around it.

Why choose Umbria for your destination wedding?

Umbria doesn't ask for attention. And that's part of its charm.

Here, beauty often comes from what is already there: an old stone façade covered in climbing plants, an olive grove surrounding a country house, the silhouette of a medieval village in the distance or the changing colour of the hills just before sunset.

For a wedding, this creates an extraordinary backdrop, one that doesn't need to be transformed completely in order to feel special.

Instead, the celebration can work with its surroundings.

Imagine an outdoor ceremony overlooking the countryside, followed by aperitivo in the garden.

Dinner begins as the sun is setting, perhaps around one long table surrounded by your closest family and friends.

Candles are lit as the evening becomes darker.

Music starts.

And nobody is in a hurry to leave.

It is elegant, but never rigid.

Beautiful, but never disconnected from the place around it.

For couples who want their wedding to feel intentional, relaxed and personal, Umbria offers something increasingly rare: space to slow down.

An alternative to Italy's most famous wedding destinations

Choosing Umbria doesn't mean looking for a “second Tuscany”.

The two regions share some of the landscapes international couples associate with the Italian countryside (rolling hills, vineyards, olive groves and historic estates) but their character is different.

Umbria often feels smaller, quieter and more intimate. And this can be particularly interesting for a destination wedding.

Rather than arriving somewhere that already feels like a wedding destination, your guests have the feeling of discovering somewhere.

A tiny village they had never heard of.

A local restaurant they would never have found themselves.

A road through the countryside that suddenly opens onto an extraordinary view.

For couples travelling from countries such as the UK, US, Australia or New Zealand, those discoveries often become part of the memories surrounding the wedding itself.

And that is something worth considering when choosing where in Italy your celebration should take place.

Where to get married in Umbria

Although Umbria is a relatively small region, its different areas can create very different wedding experiences.

Orvieto & Southern Umbria

Perched dramatically on a volcanic cliff, Orvieto is one of the most distinctive towns in central Italy.

Its cathedral, medieval streets and views over the surrounding countryside make it a wonderful destination for guests to discover during their stay.

But from a wedding planning perspective, the surrounding area is just as interesting.

Here you can find country estates, historic residences, vineyards and intimate properties surrounded by olive groves and nature.

Southern Umbria also has another important advantage for international weddings: its connection with Rome.

Depending on the venue, guests can arrive through one of Rome's international airports and reach the area without having to travel across the entire country.

For a destination wedding, that balance between feeling immersed in the countryside and remaining relatively accessible can make a significant difference.

A planner's perspective

When considering a countryside venue, don't look only at the wedding spaces.

Look at what surrounds it.

Where could your guests stay? Are there enough rooms nearby? Could transfers be organised easily? Is there somewhere for everyone to meet the evening before?

For destination weddings, the location of the venue is part of the guest experience.

Todi & the Umbrian countryside

The countryside surrounding Todi is perhaps one of the landscapes that most closely represents the romantic image of Umbria.

Rolling hills, olive trees, vineyards, country roads and secluded estates make this area particularly beautiful for weddings centred around nature.

It lends itself wonderfully to celebrations where several moments happen outdoors, from the ceremony to aperitivo and dinner.

For smaller weddings especially, a private country estate can create the feeling that, for a few days, you and your guests have your own little corner of Italy.

Perugia & Central Umbria

Central Umbria offers an interesting balance between countryside and culture.

Perugia itself brings history, architecture and a lively Italian atmosphere, while the surrounding landscape quickly becomes rural.

This can work particularly well for couples who want their guests to experience more than the wedding venue itself.

Nearby towns, local restaurants, wineries and countryside experiences can become part of a longer stay in the region without needing to create an overly structured itinerary.

Lake Trasimeno

Umbria also has a completely different side.

Around Lake Trasimeno, the landscape becomes softer and more open, with water, small villages and beautiful sunsets.

For couples who love the idea of a lakeside atmosphere but still want the warmth and authenticity of central Italy, this area can offer an unexpected alternative.

Finding the right wedding venue in Umbria

There are beautiful venues throughout the region.

Historic villas. Castles. Restored farmhouses. Wine estates. Country houses. Medieval properties. Boutique hotels surrounded by nature.

But when I'm evaluating a venue for a destination wedding, beauty is only the beginning.

The real question is: “How will the wedding actually live here?”

Imagine walking through the day.

Where will the ceremony happen?

Where will guests go immediately afterwards?

Will they naturally discover the aperitivo area, or will they need to be directed?

What will the space feel like at sunset?

Where will dinner take place?

How will lighting change the atmosphere once it becomes dark?

Where will people dance?

And what happens if it rains?

These questions are less romantic than choosing between two beautiful photographs of venues.

But they are exactly what determines whether a wedding feels effortless.

A planner's perspective

A beautiful venue isn't necessarily the right venue.

For destination weddings I also look at accommodation capacity, access for suppliers, distances between spaces, transport possibilities, noise restrictions, catering facilities and, importantly, the Plan B.

The best venue is the one where beauty and logistics quietly support each other.

From a wedding day to a wedding experience

This is perhaps my favourite part of planning a destination wedding.

Your guests aren't simply driving twenty minutes to attend your ceremony. They may be taking a twelve-hour flight. They are taking days away from work, travelling across countries and turning your wedding into part of their own journey.

And that deserves to be considered.

But creating a memorable guest experience doesn't mean filling every hour with activities.

Actually, I often believe the opposite.

Imagine arriving at a countryside estate in the afternoon. Suitcases disappear into the rooms. Someone is already sitting outside with a glass of wine. Others are exploring the garden.

That evening, everyone meets again for a relaxed pizza party. Nothing overly styled or formal; simply good food, wine and that particular excitement that exists the night before a wedding.

The following morning is slow. Breakfast. Coffee. Perhaps a swim. Then everyone begins getting ready.

The ceremony happens in the late afternoon, when the light becomes softer.

Aperitivo stretches a little longer than expected because nobody wants to leave the garden.

Dinner begins outside.

And the following morning, the same people meet again over breakfast, slightly tired, probably, before deciding whether to explore a nearby village or simply stay by the pool.

That is a destination wedding too.

And sometimes those seemingly insignificant hours between the “official” moments become the ones people remember most.

When is the best time to get married in Umbria?

The wedding season in Umbria can stretch from spring into autumn, with each period creating a different atmosphere.

May & June

The countryside is beautifully green, flowers are blooming and daylight lasts well into the evening. These months are particularly suited to couples imagining a celebration surrounded by nature.

July & August

Summer brings long days and wonderful evenings outdoors, but temperatures during the afternoon can become high.

This doesn't necessarily mean avoiding these months: it means designing the timeline accordingly. A later ceremony, shaded areas, plenty of water and thoughtful transitions between spaces can completely change the guest experience.

September

September has a particularly beautiful quality in Umbria.

The light becomes warmer, the landscape begins its gradual transition towards autumn and outdoor dinners can still be wonderful.

For destination weddings, it can offer a lovely balance between summer atmosphere and slightly softer temperatures.

Early autumn

For couples attracted to richer colours, candlelight and a more intimate atmosphere, early autumn can also be beautiful.

Whatever the month, however, I wouldn't choose a wedding date based purely on photographs.

Consider sunset time, temperature, vegetation, tourism, accommodation availability and how much of your celebration you imagine happening outdoors.

Getting to Umbria from abroad

One of the first questions international couples naturally ask is: “How will our guests get there?”

For Southern and Central Umbria, Rome is often the most practical international gateway.

From there, guests can continue by rental car, train or organised private transfer depending on the venue.

This makes areas such as Orvieto particularly interesting: they offer the feeling of escaping into the Italian countryside without necessarily requiring an additional domestic flight.

However, airport distance is only one part of the equation.

When evaluating logistics, consider the journey from beginning to end.

Airport → accommodation → wedding venue → any pre-wedding events → return journey.

For a group travelling internationally, reducing unnecessary movements can make the entire experience feel significantly more relaxed.

Designing a wedding that belongs in Umbria

One of the things I believe most strongly about wedding design is that a destination should never feel like a backdrop that could simply be replaced with another one.

If you are getting married in Umbria, let Umbria become part of the design.

Not literally.

Your wedding doesn't need olive branches on every table simply because you're in Italy.

Instead, look at the colours already surrounding you.

The warm stone of the architecture.

The muted greens of the landscape.

The texture of linen.

The way candlelight interacts with old walls.

The flowers that naturally belong to that season.

The view from the dinner table.

Good wedding design doesn't compete with a beautiful place. It notices it.

And then it builds around it.

This is where planning and design become inseparable.

The position of a table isn't only a logistical decision: it determines what your guests will see during dinner.

The ceremony time isn't only part of the timeline: it determines the light.

The stationery isn't an isolated decorative element: it can introduce the atmosphere of the celebration months before anyone arrives in Italy.

Every choice belongs to the same story.

So, is Umbria the right destination for your wedding?

Perhaps Umbria isn't for everyone.

And I think that's part of what makes it special.

It might be for you if you are less interested in having the most recognisable Italian destination and more interested in discovering somewhere that feels meaningful.

If you imagine twenty, forty or sixty of your favourite people gathered around a table rather than an enormous ballroom.

If you care deeply about design but don't want your wedding to feel staged.

If good food, beautiful surroundings and time spent together matter more to you than formality.

If you want your guests to return home talking not only about how beautiful your wedding was, but about those few days they spent together in Italy.

Then perhaps you shouldn't simply ask: “Where should we get married in Italy?”

Perhaps the better question is: “How do we want those days in Italy to feel?”

And if the answer is intimate, beautiful, unhurried and deeply connected to the place around you, Umbria might be exactly where your story begins.

I'm Elisa, a wedding planner and designer based in Umbria, working with international couples who want to experience this part of Italy through a celebration that feels entirely their own.

My approach brings planning and design together from the beginning, from finding the right place and creating the guest experience to developing the visual direction and seeing how every element will work within the real spaces of the venue.

Because a beautiful destination is only the beginning. What matters is what you create within it.
